Asbestos (Construction) Compliance for Construction

29 CFR 1926.1101 — Protects construction workers from asbestos exposure during demolition, renovation, removal, repair, maintenance, and installation activities involving asbestos-containing materials (ACM) or presumed asbestos-containing materials (PACM).

Any construction employer whose workers may be exposed to asbestos during construction, alteration, repair, maintenance, or renovation.

How Asbestos (Construction) Applies to Construction

Pre-1980 buildings are presumed to contain ACM in TSI, surfacing, and miscellaneous materials. Demolition and renovation contractors must conduct or verify a survey by an accredited inspector before any disturbance. Class I work (TSI/surfacing removal >25 ft²) requires negative-pressure enclosures and accredited supervisor.

  • Respiratory protection per work class and assessment results
  • Hygiene facilities — change rooms, showers, equipment rooms (Class I)
  • Medical surveillance for workers exposed 30+ days/year or wearing respirators 30+ days/year
  • Asbestos awareness training (2 hr) for Class IV; full training for higher classes
  • 30-year exposure and medical recordkeeping
